Travel Photography at Cloud walking

Hamnøy, Norway.

Introduction

In Cambodia (2012-2014), I first read Pico Iyer’s essay “Why We Travel.” I can’t recall if I was in a hammock trying to keep cool in the tropical weather or if it was late at night under a mosquito net, my face illuminated by my laptop’s screen. Still, one line from the piece floored me, “And that is why many of us travel not in search of answers, but of better questions.”

For me, asking better questions comes from looking, paying attention, and reflecting on my views and feelings.

For over a decade, this idea has stuck with me and guided my photography work. However, this way of looking seems most at play when I am out of my usual routine.

Travel can shake us out of our usual humdrum days. Maybe it is just the newness or novelty, but blues always seem a bit bluer when standing somewhere new.

So, even though you may have ended up on this page while sipping a delicious cappuccino at a familiar place, I hope these images offer a moment of pause and remind you of the power of the unfamiliar.

Thank you for taking the time to browse my work. I am humbled to have my work on the walls of one of my favorite places in South Bend.

Background Info

From 2012 to 2024, while I served in the United States Peace Corps in Cambodia, my point-and-shoot camera was always with me. It was a simple camera, but it encouraged me to explore and connect with the community. I’d find myself on backroads photographing the last moments of sun glinting off of verdant rice paddies or focusing my lens on moments of daily life that shifted from being unfamiliar in the early months of my work to well-known towards the end of the two years in the country.

Looking back, I realize this camera became a tool that pushed me to pay closer attention to the world around me. Photography was a mindful exploration of the place, and it helped compartmentalize its overwhelming newness.

After returning stateside, my pursuit of photography took me to the University of Missouri, where I earned my M.A. in journalism with an emphasis on photojournalism.

This education shifted my thoughts about photography from singular moments to parts of a greater whole. Additionally, the photojournalist style continues to be integral to the imagery I make for editorial and commercial projects. You can view more of my travel work here and my entire portfolio here.
